The Haiku Foundation honors the work of contemporary masters of the dual art of haiga: visual image wedded to haiku. This month’s featured artist is Cor van den Heuvel.
Cor van den Heuvel won the Shiki Award in 2002 for his contributions to haiku. His most recent publication is a book of haiga about baseball in collaboration with Anita Virgil. Virgil did the ink sketches for the haiga and designed the book, while van den Heuvel wrote the haiku and senryu. Of the 12 haiga in the book, six of the poems are from Baseball Haiku (Norton 2007), edited by van den Heuvel and Nanae Tamura, and the other six were written for this new work, called At Bat (Peaks Press 2015).
