The Haiku Foundation honors the work of contemporary masters of the dual art of haiga: visual image wedded to haiku. This month’s featured artist is Pamela Garry.
Pamela began studying watercolor painting during retirement. The COVID-19 pandemic shutdown opened a door to haiku. She has enjoyed collaborating with poets around the world and weaving enduring moments into various poetic forms. Her poems, including many haiga, have been published in journals that inspire her: Acorn: a journal of contemporary haiku, The Heron’s Nest, Drifting Sands Haibun, Modern Haiku, Frogpond, Pan Haiku Review, Heliosparrow Poetry Journal, Songbirds Waka Anthology, Songbirds Online Anthology, Contemporary Haibun Online, Contemporary Haibun (print), Under the Bashō, Cattails, Daily Haiga, Password: Journal of Very Short Poetry, Whiptail Journal of the Single-Line Poem, Failed Haiku Senryu Journal, and The Haiku Foundation’s Haiku Dialogue and Renku Sessions. She has worked as a teacher, vocational counselor, program manager, and instructional designer. She enjoyed working with diverse populations, including refugees and the Deaf. Before marriage and children and grandchildren, she and her husband-to-be lived a glorious stint in the Vermont woods in a teepee of their own making. Now they live in Connecticut in a home designed for accessibility and near loved ones.
