The Renku Sessions: Invitation

renku_300

Hello, everyone. I am John Stevenson and I will be your guide in this twenty verse nijûin renku.

This week, you are invited to submit up to three offers for the hokku (opening verse). The hokku is a three-line verse (in English-language renku). In this renku it will contain an autumn season word or phrase from this on-line listing:

https://thehaikufoundation.org/omeka/items/show/821

Like a haiku, it contains a single grammatical break or cut that creates a juxtaposition of two images.

The hokku, like all of the first four verses, should maintain a somewhat formal aspect. It should not contain any unpleasant or controversial images. While it might represent some very deep feelings, they will not be expressed directly. Think of it as offering a verse, upon first meeting a poet for whom you have very deep respect.

Looking forward to seeing your hokku!

John
