The Renku Sessions: Barely Time – Week 11

renku_300

Hello again. This is John Stevenson and I will be facilitating a twelve verse renku, in the Jûnichô style. Over the coming weeks we will add one new verse each week, selected from your offers.

A total of 219 offers this week, from thirty-three poets.

One of the things that is painfully different about this kind of renku, compared to live composition with a smaller group, is the fact that so many participants will have contributed so much without having any of it show up in the final set of verses. And the fact that we are only looking for twelve verses this time accentuates that result. I just hope, if you are among the majority of contributors whose offers will not result in a selection, that you realize how deeply I appreciate your presence in these sessions and the embarrassment of riches your creativity has produced here.

Here are just some of the verses that caught my eye this time:

Wendy C. Bialek

Patrick Sweeney

Laurie Greer

Jonathan Alderfer

Wendy C. Bialek

Some of you must have noted my comment that a sound image would be good at this point. I still feel that way and, while this week’s selection is also about the absence of certain sounds, it suggests all that can be achieved by working around such limitations.

THIS WEEK

Please offer candidates for an eleventh verse, using these guidelines:

  • Three lines
  • A spring blossom verse: traditionally cherry blossom but any spring blossom from our list: http://www.2hweb.net/haikai/renku/500ESWd.html
  • Linking with the tenth verse only (no obvious linking to any of the first nine verses)
  • Without an internal grammatical break or pause

Please enter your offers in the comments section, below. Offers should be made by midnight, eastern US time, on Monday, August 29. On Thursday, September 1st I will post a selection of the offers, with my comments, and select the eleventh verse for “Barely Time.”

Looking forward to your offers,
John Stevenson

      1. For that matter, any mention of a fruit (tree or blossom) will link to apple in a previous verse, right??

        1. Not to mention the tree/pine link ; ) but trees certainly can’t be off limits to all renku. I don’t know if specific fruit names should be avoided in this case, though ‘apple’ probably should be for sure.

        2. erm, yes and no.
in a short renku (like the junicho) it is best to avoid repeating almost identical topics but such practice is not at all off limits as long as an apptopriate distance between verses is respected and the context in which they appear is not the same.
i mean, Basho & co must have known what they were doing, and yet there are two blossom verses in the kasen, not to mention three moons, and nobody can deny blossom and moon are the most prominent topics.
even in shorter forms like the 20 verse nijuin there are two moon verses (as well as two pairs of love verses)

          1. Thanks, Polona! With only 12 verses, I was concerned just how limited we would be with distance between repeated topics. You’re right of course, that context matters. Naming a horse Molasses versus literal apple juice comes to mind. Hence, my quandry re: applejuice/fruit blossom and Chris’ astute observation of tree/pine.
It is fun trying to figure out the nuances! 😊
            Betty
