Marlene Mountain contends that the concept of ‘no-self’ was created for her long ago by men who knew they had plenty of self by just being male. women need plenty of self to get thru the thickness of established thought/s. in my earlier painting years i often heard ‘wow you paint like a man.’ i didn’t. i painted as my ‘self.’ many years later i was told i was painting ‘center core’ images, very female. i rejected my ‘man’ paintings because they didn’t ‘say anything.’ eventually i forgave my harsh criticism. now they hang on my walls and sometimes i’ll walk up to one and kiss it. they fit in now with those which might ‘say too much.’
