Andrew Riutta was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, a region known for its harsh winters and profound isolation, but also its abundance of natural splendor. He is the father of a bright and beautiful nine-year-old daughter, Issabella. In the spring of 2011, his essay, "The Myths of Manhood," will be included in National Public Radio anthology series, This I Believe.

Awards and Other Honors: Winner, William J. Shaw prize (2008); Second Place, Tanka Society of America annual contest (2007); Honorable Mention, Michigan Liberal Arts poetry contest (2007); Third Prize, Kusamakura haiku contest (2005); Basho memorial museum selection (2005).

Books Published: Cigarette Butts and Lilacs (Modern English Tanka Press, Baltimore, MD, 2007).
