Sandra St-Laurent

Born: 1974 in Québec, Canada
Resides: Yukon Territory, Northern Canada, Canada

If she were to get inked, it would be an octopus tattoo for its three hearts: nature, family and poetry.
Ambidextrous, she enjoys juggling multiple projects. She used to write short stories but stumbled upon haiku during endless nights of insomnia. Since then, she has dreamed of writing haiku, haibun, and haiga all day! Her poetry had been published in French and English in anthologies around the world, including in twelve anthologies at Les Editions Pippa (Paris, France) and were published in journals and magazines such as Haiku Canada Review, Presence, Wales Haiku Journal, Drifting Sands Haibun Journal, Prune Juice, Bottle Rocket and the The Asahi Shimbun (Asahi Haikuist Network). Her French poetry can be found in Gong, L'ours dansant, L'écho de l'étroit chemin (haibun) and in the Haiku Canada Review in both Canada's official languages.
Since 2023, she has been the regional coordinator for Haiku Canada BC-Territories and a proofreader for the Haiku Canada Review published by Mike Montreuil. She is a founding member and now vice-president of the Canadian Northern and Western Writers Association/Regroupement des écrivains du Nord et de l’Ouest canadiens (RÉNOC). She was a judge for the Borealis Prize - The Commissioner of Yukon Award for Literary Contribution (2023) in another local writing competition.
She thinks that haiku read backwards should say “empathy” as it is a fabulous way to honor and connect with everything alive around us. Even when it’s, in fact, a little bit dead. She believes in the benefits of haiku and hot chocolate, especially when prescribed together.
