Per Diem for December 2019: Water
Per Diem: Daily Haiku for December 2019 features Robert Kania’s collection on the theme of ‘Water’. This is what Robert has to say by way of an introduction to this theme:
Water is one of the most common and traditional topics associated with haiku – both in the classic haiku of Japanese masters and in modern non-Japanese haiku. It is a life force but it can also be a destructive force. Water in the form of rain, ponds, rivers, lakes, seas, ocean, flood or dew all appear in this selection. Each of the authors from sixteen countries and five continents captivated or surprised me in some way. The following poems present new perspectives on the relatively ordinary phenomena of water we encounter in our daily lives, as well as depicting the unexpected and even the magical.
What was the inspiration for this topic? Undoubtedly, the famous Basho haiku, which has stuck in my head and heart the most:
old pond
a frog jumps in
water’s sound
