Our Roving Ambassador in London

During a visit to London in May 2023, Roving Ambassador Roberta Beary met with three haiku poets, Annie Bachini, Clare Martin, and Andrew Shimield, over the course of three days. The meetings included discussions of subjects of interest to the global haiku community.

Annie Bachini talked about her newest collection, Two Haiku Poets (Iron Press, 2023) which also features poems by Helen Buckingham. Over the course of an hour’s meeting in a hotel lounge, she also shared her experiences as part of the UK haiku community, including her historic trip to Japan for the Haiku Worldwide Symposium led by Haiku International Association’s Akito Arima.

Over an evening meal, Clare Martin detailed her experiences as an emerging haiku poet with a growing list of publication credits. Topics such as haiku mentorship programs and opportunities for publication elicited stimulating points of discussion, including use of The Haiku Foundation’s online resources such as the Haiku Registry.

Andrew Shimield touched on highlights of the British Haiku Society and its local groups, including the London Haiku Group, which he coordinates both in person and on Zoom. An enjoyable hour sampling various hotel coffees while veering into the merits of haiku workshops passed too quickly.

    1. Many thanks, Barbara, I will keep that in mind! Already planning a visit to Milan sometime before the autumn. I easily could include Verona.
