Description
This book by Lafcadio Hearn, published in 1904, was one of the earliest attempts by a foreigner to interpret Japanese culture as a whole to the West. Written during the period of the Meiji reforms, it reflects the dominant emphasis during that period in Japan on molding a modern, nationalist state.. Hearn lived in Japan, but wrote under the strong influence of Herbert Spencer, an English philosopher preeminent at the time.
