I am pleased to welcome you to Juxtapositions 9 and hope you enjoy its contents. Original haiga by our new haiga editor, the internationally renowned artist Ion Codrescu, appears throughout the issue. There are also five fine articles: “Referencing Language Words in English Haiku,” by Randy Brooks; “‘Factor N400’ in the Reading of English-Language Haiku” by Jan Nasemann et al; “Synesthesia and Haiku” by Owen Bullock; “Prison Participant Poetry” by Dorothy Abram; and “Natural Meddlers,” by Ryan Lally. Cherie Hunter Day’s insightful interview with Chad Lee Robinson, “Walking in a Sacred Way,” follows the essays, and our resources section contains Randy Brooks’ annotated bibliography of haiku anthologies.
Thanks to the generosity of our anonymous donor, we once again offer an award for the best content in the previous issue. Congratulations to Madelaine Caritas Longman, whose article, “bird tweets turn into an orchestra: Haiku and Neurodiversity,” received the “best of ” award for Juxta 8!
Looking ahead to 2024, Juxta 10 will be a themed issue focusing on translation. We seek submissions in three categories: full-length academic articles, personal approaches to translation by established translators, and interviews. Please see the full call for papers on p. 12.
