Haiku of the Day Theme for May 2025: Glaciers

Jim writes:

“Each April The Haiku Foundation hosts International Haiku Poetry Day, our celebration of all things haiku. In addition to the HaikuLife Haiku Film Festival, the announcements of the Touchstone Awards (in three categories), and sharing haiku celebrations from around the world, IHPD also features the Earthrise Rolling Haiku Collaborative, the world’s largest annual online collaborative poem. We usually source the seed poem, from which all the responses ultimately result, from the United Nations’ designation of the year. This year’s designations included, among others, Glacier Preservation, and so I thought I would ask Charlie Trumbull to spin the dials on his magic haiku database to see what poets might have written about such a magnificent thing. To my surprise, there was a considerable quantity of fine poems, and I thought it was a shame to be able to share only one. As a consequence, I included a few in my introductory words to this year’s Earthrise offering, and decided to create a Haiku of the Day Gallery to share with you. Better sooner than later, as glaciers seem well on their way to extinction, and given what it will take to make new ones, we may well not be around to appreciate them when they’re back. Enjoy!”
