Haiku Music Challenge 51
Welcome to the fifty-first iteration of the Haiku Music Challenge, hosted by Naviar Records.
Mark Morris is a journalist with more than a decade of experience writing for major broadcasters and national publications in the UK. He runs the Twitter account Pure Land Haiku, which has a simple goal best explained in the form of its strap-line: haiku to help you relax. In addition to above, Mark also produces music under the pseudonym Pure Land Haiku Music and Journoiz.
true tranquillity
hiding underneath creased sheetss —
unknowable blue
Mark offered a haiku for our music challenge a few months ago, and last week he published Deep Blue: Haiku About the Sea, a great little book exploring the Earth’s oceans using haiku poetry. This is a beautiful collection which took me 30 minutes to finish, but requires multiple readings to fully appreciate its variety. If you’re interested you can get a digital copy from Amazon.
Twenty-four tracks were made in response to Mark’s poem, and here’s a selection I made for The Haiku Foundation:
Track: Beneath Your Waves
Artist: cha0sb0y
Genre: instrumental, rockA very catchy rock riff by a new member of the Naviar Haiku challenge, Steven Marc Weber, aka cha0sb0y.
Track: Blue Tranquility
Artist: encym
Genre: electronic, ambientThe evocative soudscapes of encym are a perfect fit for Mark’s haiku.
Track: Unknown Blue
Artist: synoneiro
Genre: ambientDarker, more mysterious, but no less beautiful: “Unknown Blue” by synoneiro, another new member of Naviar’s community.
Thank you for listening. Next week we’ll be listening to music inspired by another haiku by Mark Morris:
rumbling in the mist
a whale soars towards the light —
stories from below
The deadline to submit your track is 8 April. To find out more and participate, please visit the Naviar Records site.

Steven Marc Weber, aka cha0sb0y … this riff took me, as we say: “back in the day”… very fine sound with Mark’s haiku. Thank you.
