Stephen Addiss
The Haiku Foundation honors the work of contemporary masters of the dual art of haiga: visual image wedded to haiku. This month’s featured artist is Stephen Addiss.
After studying with John Cage, Stephen Addiss traveled for 16 years performing folk and traditional music in Asia, Africa, and the United States as part of the duo Addiss & Crofut. He then completed a PhD at the University of Michigan and began teaching a variety of subjects, focusing on Japanese and Zen arts, first at the University of Kansas and later at the University of Richmond. His haiku and haiga have appeared widely. His books include Cloud Calligraphy, A Haiku Menagerie, The Art of Zen, Haiga: Haiku-Painting, The Art of Chinese Calligraphy, Haiku People, A Haiku Garden, Haiku Humor, Tao Te Ching, Japanese Calligraphy, Haiku: An Anthology, and The Art of Haiku.
