Haiku journals & publications

I would appreciate the thoughts of others as to good places to submit haiku for publication.  I regularly peruse Duotrope's Digest, so I'm not lacking for potential markets, but I'm not sure how to rate or compare them.  I realize that some of this boils down to personal preference, but I thought I'd throw the question out there anyway.

Hello, J,

As you say, a lot of it is personal preference.  And the way to find out what your preference is -- that is, who publishes the kinds of haiku you enjoy writing and reading -- is to read, read, read.

Some of the major journals are Frogpond (Haiku Society of America), The Heron's Nest, Acorn, Simply Haiku, Modern Haiku, and Notes From the Gean.  I know I'm leaving out some very good ones -- it's late and I think my brain's quit for the day -- but those are the first that came to mind.

Some of the above journals are print, and some are online.  They all have websites, though, that give submission guidelines (and a procedure for getting sample copies of the print journals) and usually at least a hint of their philosophy, so you'll know if it's a place you'd be happy to be seen in.

I'm the editor of Haiku NewZ and can recommend the Journals listing on the website (link at the bottom), it covers English-language journals from around the world for haiku, tanka, haibun, haiga, renku and senryu. Some are specialist journals, some accept all forms.

Each listing on Haiku NewZ is accompanied by a link to the website, if there is a website (and mostly there is).

I endeavour to list only those journals that publish regularly, that are generally reliable and that contain "proper" haiku (or whatever).
