ARLINGTON, VA—Turtle Light Press proudly announces the release of the winner of its fifth haiku chapbook competition, Furrows of Snow by Glenn G. Coats of Carolina Springs, North Carolina.
The collection, which includes 29 haiku as well as black and white photos, guides us on a meditative journey down a handful of East Coast rivers. It offers a timeless celebration of fishing and life on the river as well as poignant reminders of our aging, as reflected in poems about the author’s mother.
“The poems in Furrows of Snow are essential,” said Susan Antolin, the 2019 contest judge, “especially in these times when life seems so harried.”
Coats, 68, a retired reading teacher who now lives in Carolina Shores, North Carolina, has been writing haiku for more than 30 years. He got started the way a lot of elementary school teachers do— by teaching haiku as a creative writing lesson. But then he got more into it himself, reading extensively, writing poems and submitting to journals.
He has won first place in the Peggy Willis Lyles contest, first place from the North Carolina Poetry Society for the Lyman Award and many others. He has also won many awards for his haibun writing.
Furrows of Snow, which lists for $12.50, is available through our own website store
