Autumn Moon Haiku Journal - Submission Guidelines

Submissions or queries to: tanchopress@gmail.com

Rules for Submission:

Haiku submitted should be in accordance with the haiku spirit, sensibility and phrasing discussed in About Autumn Moon Haiku Journal. Please read this updated section prior to submitting.

Send up to TWO original unpublished haiku for each issue through email (Subject line: Autumn Moon Haiku Journal) in the body of the email, no attachments allowed, to: tanchopress@gmail.com.
Write each haiku in your original language, if not English, with an English translation, which might be smoothed out by the editors.

Each haiku should ideally be structured in three short/long/short horizontal lines, though one line horizontal haiku and other forms will be considered. If seasonal, the haiku submitted should be in accordance with the seasons of the issue for which it is submitted.

Please note that given the fact we only look at the haiku submitted, to be impartial, closer to the submission deadline, we cannot acknowledge receipt of submissions by email prior to that. You may hear a few days before the deadline if your haiku was accepted. You will NOT hear until after the deadline if your haiku was rejected.

Deadlines for submission: Autumn/Winter, November 1st & Spring/Summer, May 1st.
Publication: Spring/Summer appears in mid-May to June, Autumn/Winter appears in mid-November to December.

Disclaimer:

The journal is not responsible for plagiarized haiku, intentional or unintentional, though the haiku poet's sincerity in this matter is of course expected as you are expressing your own sensibility and insight.

Previous Contest Winners

The year 2024 marks the 41st year of this esteemed contest, since there were no contests in five of the early years, around the passing of Kiyoshi Tokutomi. To honor the winners through the years, YTHS has created a document of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place haiku with the author's name for every year a contest was held. Contestants may wish to study these winning haiku. Here is the link. Many of the contests put out brochures with the haiku of both the winners and the honorable mentions, along with the comments of the judge(s) on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place haiku. Here is the link.

Contest Kigo Caution

In past Tokutomi contests, a significant number of submitted haiku have had to be removed from consideration. This was primarily because they failed to meet the last of the contest rules: "Haiku with more than one recognized kigo will be disqualified." Recognized kigo are the contest kigo, plus any of the kigo in all of the lists linked to from the Kigo-Summary page of this website.

The Tokutomi Contest Coordinator for the 2013 and 2014 contests, Joan Zimmerman, has written a thoughtful essay on this topic. Here is the link.  All poets considering entering the 2024 Tokutomi Haiku Contest are encouraged to read this essay and to adhere to one kigo from the list above for each submitted haiku.

Note Regarding Biographies: We have re-envisioned how biographies are handled on Drifting Sands. Now, as your bio changes, it changes everywhere the new system uses it (all issues going forward). It's also not limited to a paragraph or two, or just one image. Each poet in the directory has a dedicated page that they can expound on. These pages are exactly like the pages offered on the Poet's Hub and will eventually fully replace that functionality, providing a landing page for every poet in our community. As such, these pages are like miniature websites that offer the ability to post images, text, links to a variety of resources, and even the ability to do things like embed a YouTube video if you have a poetry related project you want to share. Drifting Sands is all about the haibun and tanka prose communities. These pages represent the many faces that make up that community. We're very excited about this new approach in that it both streamlines our workload and provides better exposure for our poets. We hope you'll take full advantage of what this feature offers as you become familiar with it. You can look up your existing bio page here: DSH Contributors A-Z.

Submission Guides
The Mamba's Submission Guideline:

We are looking forward to Africa themed haiku i.e. haiku about African sights, sounds and settings.

We may also accept haiku which explore a universal theme but must delight and thrill us.

– Haiku must contain clear images, settings and juxtaposition.

– Haiku must be concise and as brief as possible. (Though 17 syllable haiku are welcome)

– We encourage experimentation with haiku; therefore one-liners will be considered.

– We have zero tolerance for plagiarism, profanity, use of vulgar words and politically biased verses.

– We encourage the use of African season words as opposed to the Japanese kigo.

– We accept haiga as long as enough copyright evidence is provided for the haiku and picture respectively.

– Please submit 10 haiku and/or  5 photo haiku or haiga at a time.

Submission window will be open: October 15th, closes January 15th for February Issue; re-opens May 15th to August 15th for September Issue respectively.

The Mamba Journal will be published twice a year: February 15th and September 15th each year.

All submissions must be sent to: africahaikunetwork@gmail.com with the subject line labelled "The Mamba Submission".

Submitters must include their full name/pen name, country and city of residence.
