Ribbons seeks fresh material of the highest standard to present to our readers. Any tanka with a sensibility that distinguishes the form will be considered. Therefore, we welcome different syllable counts, varying individual styles and techniques, and are open to diverse yet appropriate subject material. We also welcome essays that offer fresh insights and information.

The entry fee for the Snapshot Press Book Awards is £20 or US $30.

£400/US $600 total prize money.

12 haiku will be selected as monthly winners and will be published prominently in The Haiku Calendar 2023. The prize money will be divided equally between the 12 winners. 40 additional haiku will be selected as runners-up and these will also be published in the calendar.

Entrants may win more than one prize.

For this year's contest:

-We accept only African themed haiku i.e. haiku about African sights, sounds and settings. Haiku based on non-African theme will not be accepted, however, haiku with universal themes may be considered.
– Haiku must contain clear images, settings and juxtaposition.
– Haiku must be concise and as brief as possible.
- A 17 syllable haiku accepted but not encouraged.
– One-word or one-liner haiku will not be accepted.
– We will not tolerate plagiarism, profanity, use of vulgar words and politically
motivated verses.
– We encourage the use of African season words as opposed to the Japanese kigo.
– We do not accept haiga.
– Please submit up to five (5) haiku for this contest.

Submission window opens from September 1, 2021, to November 30, 2021, and should be sent to: africahaikunetwork@gmail.com, the official email address of Africa Haiku Network.

Emails should carry subject line "Africa Haiku Prize 2021", followed by name and
country of submitter in the body of mail.

Results will be out between December 2021 and January 2022 and judges or panel announced concurrently.

Judges or panel's decision on winning haiku is final and not subject to negotiation.
There is no restriction on submitter's age, and every person can submit to either the
African Category or Non-African Category with the exception of members of Africa
Haiku Network editorial team.

The overall winners in each category will receive gifts and certificate. While 2nd and
3rd place winners in each category receive certificate only. We will also acknowledge
other distinguished non-winning haiku by way of honorable mention.

We hope to improve upon winners' prizes in the years ahead.

Announcing The Seventh Jane Reichhold Memorial Haiga Competition

Failed Haiku is happy to announce the senryu haiga competition in honor of Jane Reichhold. Jane's passing touched many of us; her love of all the haiku arts was legendary. We especially wanted her love of haiga and of senryu to be remembered and celebrated by artists and poets of both forms.

We have assembled two judges for this competition: Steve Hodge and Hemapriya Chellapan. Their decisions will be final.

Here are the rules of the competition:

Two First Place winners will be chosen from the following categories:

- Traditional Haiga, as in ink, ink wash, watercolor, oils, or tempera.
- Photographic and mixed media-based haiga.

All should contain a 'senryu' as the poem.

Winners in each category will be published in the November 5 issue of Failed Haiku, along with a short write-up by the judges.

The entries can be by a single artist providing both senryu and image, OR any form of collaboration between artists. Please be sure to include complete attribution to both images and poems with your entry.

Only TWO entries per artist, and collaborations will count toward both artists' totals.

All entries can be sent in either JPG or PNG formats and should be of high quality.

In the email containing your entry please tell us 'briefly' about how the image was created AND what category you are entering them in!

Entries should be original work that has not appeared in any edited journal, but work that has been displayed on social media or personal websites is acceptable.

All entries should be sent by email to reichholdhaiga@haikuhut.com ONLY.

Entries will ONLY be accepted from October 15 to October 20th at Midnight Eastern Time. Any entries received earlier or later will NOT be judged.

The judges will render their final decisions by October 30th, and the top three winners will be notified shortly thereafter.

The judges will, at their sole discretion, name ANY number of other entries as Honorable Mentions or Highly Commended.

Jane Reichhold was a poet/artist who worked in every form of haiga, some of which can be found at her site: AHA Poetry.
