Honestly, Andy, you can do anything you want.  There is no real format that I'm aware of, nor would it matter, regarding a four sequence haiku set.  Possibly someone else has a different view?

Are you scent linking them?  Or linking them by subject ... or by?  Are they simply snipit views of life or nature?

If the read well together, I wouldn't do anything but let them be as they are - 4 haiku in sequence (chain).

Enjoy ...

(a second post to be sure it is seen by all members)

Hello and a continued welcome to the THF!

We are, as all forums, slammed with spam memberships and are now actively trying to do something about it.  There is no easy single answer even with the finest spam software available.  It is possible that a membership could get caught in the crossfire of an IP that produces spam members.  It is therefore also possible that when we delete that IP a member could get caught up in that and disappear with the IP.  That is the worst case scenario but it happens.  We are doing everything we can to prevent that.

There are also other factors that can cause loss of membership and/or loss of information and posts.  Computers and the information they contain ... and the way they work is tricky on the very best day.

So, please, do not use the forum as a "primary" source or storage.  Always back up your work, your comments (if needed) to your personal computer or external hard drives etc.  This will help prevent a major situation for you in case something goes awry here.  It would also be the prudent approach to any and all forums that you belong to.

If there is a problem that arises, please email us immediately so that we can help you fix it.

@Sandra:

That's a great link!  Several of those poems literally took my breath.  And, as David mentioned "and taken collectively are even more so" referencing "uniformly powerful".  This shows us once again that there are many very wonderful, powerful and passionate haiku written in English - enriched with the highest author integrity to the art.

a dragonfly

I almost died last year ... a vivid close call.  This is the poem that came from that experience.

re: Scott's comment (of which I completely agree) -

How often have we critiqued someone's poem for being redundant?  How many times have poets changed a word here or there to rid the poem of unnecessary words, thematic conflicts and redundancy?

/ old pond / frog(s) jump-in sound of water /

As it so happens, Basho included both water and pond; and, they appear redundant to one another - especially considering they are referencing the same body of water. The thought that line one (as it has been handed down over generations) was thrown in for need to conform (even Basho might have felt that pressure from time to time) makes complete sense, however. There seems to be historicity to support the notion.

And, when pondering:

a frog leaps in –
the water's sound

... what else needed to be said?  But wait; the word "old" ... it modifies both water(s) ... in a way. Therefore, it also modifies the sound of the water. Or, does old water and new water sound the same when hit by a frog?  Can one be that attuned to know the difference?  Was Basho?  Rewind ... did he "throw in a line" to conform??  It appears so; and, if so, it worked ... the poem is one of the most famous of all history.  Figure that ...

These are a few of the questions; not, whether or not there was a frog.  That's a given at this point.

Just rambling ... and pondering ... to no end, I suppose ... other than it's entirely fascinating.

Periplum / Re: Goodbye, Periplum!

Hi everyone.  As David will no longer have time to respond to this activity, we are opting to lock the thread to preserve its integrity for future members to read over and ponder.  This has been a wonderful journey for all involved; and, challenging.

David has done a fabulous job and I know we all greatly appreciate his efforts.

Thanks to all for your participation, ideas and inspirations.

On another note, we are looking for a leader of the seashell game.  Please contact me if interested.

best to all and especially to David on the journey of writing his new book!

Best wishes for you, David.  Your journey into the world of Issa is meant to be - a natural connection of pysche.  I enjoyed your frog presentation at the HNA very much.  It's clear your path is in front of you which therefore is understandable that the periplum is not.  I anticipate your book with ... "anticipation"!  ;)

Wonderful meeting you and many blessings to you as you proceed in your work.  The book will be a humdinger; I'm positive about that!

all the best,

Don
ps: don't forget to pop in on the THF from time to time. And, keep us posted on the book.  Take care.

Hey Chibi,

Shirane has produced a fabulous book in Traces of Dreams.  It's a must have in my opinion.  It is very clear that Buson accepted Bashou's kawazu as indeed a frog(s).  I imagine if Bashou is reincarnated this exchange between them will continue!  I can only imagine the third poem (by Bashou) and what it would be.  I think Bashou needs to hurry back if he's going to.  Yet, if he returns as a frog, how will his poem proceed then?

and, for fun:

kawazu
do you wash your hands
of this dilema?  (don)

LOL

best to ya,

Hi,

It will go in waves (it seems) where sometimes you will get a lot of comments and other times it will be slow.  I haven't commented much this last month but next month I should have more free time!  Never worry.  Just write and keep on writing ...

As for moving up; you'll know because there won't be much to comment on in the beginner's section at a certain level.  Then, move - and a new challenge begins with more detail and more scrutiny.

best,

Don

Hey Folks,

Just a quick heads up.  Please do not send me haiga for the coming issues of Simply Haiku.  I have resigned the position.  Robert, sasa and I are in excellent graces so please, no worries there.

all the best,
