Fujiwara Akiko is a native of Kyoto, where she was born in 1974. She received the prestigious Rekitei Shin'ei Prize in 2005 for her first volume of poetry, Otozureru Koe (Visitor Voice) (Tokyo: Shoshi Yamada, 2005).

Fujiwara is also a past recipient of the annual prize from Gendaishi Techo (Contemporary Poetry Journal) for the best reader submissions of the year.
She presently lives and works in Tokyo. Pho to n, originally published in Japanese in 2007 (Tokyo: Shichosha), was Fujiwara's second volume of poetry. She will publish a third in January 2013 as an other mimicry (Tokyo: Shoshi Yamada).

Gean Tree Press is pleased to announce our new blog Haiku Matters.

http://www.geantreepress.com/apps/blog/

We plan to have a guest blogger each month to discuss a variety of haiku related topics and generally shoot the breeze, chew the fat and stimulate some healthy debate as part of our mission to "hear your voices speak".

Gean Tree Press may not necessarily agree with any of the views expounded therein but with Haiku Matters our hope is to give a platform for people from all schools of thought within haiku to express themselves freely.

If you would like to be a guest blogger for a month please contact
Colin Stewart Jones geaneditor
  • gmail[.]com with a brief proposal.

Susan Shand, England, will be our first guest blogger throughout the month of January, 2013.
Johannes S. H. Bjerg, Denmark, will be our guest for February, 2013.
Violette Rose-Jones, Australia, will be our guest for March, 2013.

Stella Pierides, Germany, will be our guest for May, 2013.

    thank you

Journal Announcements / Dear poet and friend
October 26, 2012, 10:19:27 PM
Dear poet and friend

After a brief hiatus from haiku Notes from the Gean: haiku journal
will be back on the cyber-stands on December 15th.
All submissions for all genres: haiku, tanka, haiga, haibun, linked forms & resources (essays, reviews etc);
should now be sent to Colin Stewart Jones at geaneditor[at]gmail[dot]com
and be in hand for December 1st to be considered for the December issue.

I will be solely responsible for editing Notes from the Gean: haiku journal.
Many poetry journals have only one or two editors, even within the haiku world this is the case.
As many of you know politics does have an enormous impact within publishing communities
and this seems more heightened within haiku circles: strange considering it is the worlds shortest form
and should traditionally contains no part of the self.
I want no part of cliques or groups or this or that school of thought
Notes from the Gean will accept any of the short forms provided the writing is of quality.

I have the analytics from our previous issues and it was obvious from the data,
even given the propensity for folk to jump to their own work and that of their friends,
that Notes from the Gean was getting too fat: We have a loyal readership
but it is clear from the data that even the most loyal read more from the front
of Notes from the Gean than from the back.
With this in mind Notes from the Gean will be a much slimmer volume from now on
a Leaner, Meaner Gean, if you will.

The decision to revive Notes from the Gean: haiku journal does fill a gap in the market
there are few multi-genre haiku magazines,
as far as I know Notes from the Gean is the only ELH journal that uses a page flipping format
We also allow our readers the option to print or save the PDF.
And our readers should look for further developments as we continue to embrace new technologies.

As I have said Notes from the Gean: haiku journal will be edited and typeset solely by myself
and I will be responsible for any mistakes and or failure but I stress this
My decision to do this by myself is in no way a reflection on the merit of any of the former editorial team.

Thank you for your submissions and continued support.

What people are saying about this book:

"A wonderful read and the design is superb!" -- Vida Ilieva

"Great work! A breath of fresh air. I hope this breaks out of the JSF niche market and hits the mainstream." -- Brendan Slater

" A powerful collection—innovative, sublime, raw, beautiful. Great work..."
-- George Swede.

"There's something bitingly fresh and clear about everything emanating from Colin Stewart Jones, and this fine work is no exception. I am splashed by his unexpected 'take' on things, his insight that makes me gasp at an inner level, and so to smile... I haven't finished reading 'Basho Has Left The Building' yet. Perhaps I'll just keep wandering around in there." -- Kathy Earsman
