Journal Announcements / moved by a poem
June 11, 2011, 08:00:42 PM
NTFG will soon be featuring a new commentary section

* have you ever been moved by a japanese form poem
* just had to keep coming back to it
* had a genuine haiku "moment"

if so
would you consider writing a short commentary on the piece
and sending it to me at

geaneditor@gmail.com

i am not looking for book reviews
just commentary on a single pieces
and something which perhaps shows your emotional response to a work
but a little more in-depth than the usual forum type comment

ok, looking forward to what comes my way
and remember the poem does not necessarily have had to been published by NTFG

Thanks Col  :)

More Details:

Call for September Issue:  due date is June 30th

Subject:  Length of Lines in Haiku – The haiku form's schemata.

I am looking for a submission on the subject of line length in haiku (English).  I would like it to address the differing thoughts in the haiku world regarding line length, including examples.  (S/L/S; S/S/L; etc.)  This column should touch on why the Japanese have a strong tendency to use 5/7/5 as their general basis, historically.

Subject:  One Line Haiku

I am calling for a submission to discuss the English Language One Line Haiku.  This treatment should include basic structures and examples with critique of the examples on why they work.  What makes them effective.  The article should be accessible intellectually to beginners.

Subject:  Renga

I am calling for an Introduction to Renga article. This should be a very basic approach that would keep beginning haiku poets in mind.  You can always allude to something more advanced but I'd prefer you keep the article to a basic level – beginner.

As we cover different topics and points of view we will also be developing a list of teachers who are interested in helping readers understand various aspects to writing these genres.  For this department, we are accepting all points of view from experienced, published poets.

Please query me first before writing your article.  That way we can remain on the same page and avoid a few problems before they arise.

I'm looking forward to having you aboard.  We have many topics that we would like to cover.

best to you,

Don

Journal Announcements / Birthday for Gean
April 09, 2011, 04:35:35 PM
Dear Readers,

Since its inception, Notes from the Gean has continued to expand to now include all of the haikai genres. As we continue to grow we also hope to publish more educational pieces, scholarly articles, special features and reviews from outside sources.

Notes from the Gean is a team effort and very much a labour of love for our editors--many of whom work on other projects--and all give generously of their precious time and great experience to ensure Notes from the Gean continues to remain successful and true to our vision. It is due to the combined efforts, work ethic and professional attitude and aptitude of all of our  past, present and guest editors  which has enabled Notes from the Gean to develop into what it is today.

I also realise that we would have achieved nothing without the support of all of you within the haiku community, who have enabled Notes from the Gean to publish traditional pieces,  one to four-line haiku, experimental work, and to also promote exciting new talent alongside with established writers.

Therefore, As Notes from the Gean enters its third year I  would, like to thank our literary contributors, loyal readership, financial friends and editors for ensuring that we have been successful and true to our goals, as outlined in our mission statement.

You are all a part of this and I'd like you all to join me now in wishing:

a very happy birthday to the Gean Team!

Colin Stewart Jones, Managing Editor

Religio / A Sense of Something Bigger
March 06, 2011, 01:50:49 PM
hi gang

There are many Buddhists among the haiku community but there seems to be far more people who do not overtly  hold to any religion or belief system. I'll nail my colours to the cross (mixing metaphors as I go along) and say I am a Christian.
Even though not claiming to belong to any one faith or belief is there a feeling among haijin that there is a sense of something bigger, or am I way off the mark?

I look forward with interest to your comments, replies, beliefs and philosophies.
Here is a small offer from myself for "a sense of something bigger"
