Other Haiku News / Haiku Matters
December 10, 2012, 03:28:33 PM
Gean Tree Press is pleased to announce our new blog Haiku Matters.

http://www.geantreepress.com/apps/blog/

We plan to have a guest blogger each month to discuss a variety of haiku related topics and generally shoot the breeze, chew the fat and stimulate some healthy debate as part of our mission to "hear your voices speak".

Gean Tree Press may not necessarily agree with any of the views expounded therein but with Haiku Matters our hope is to give a platform for people from all schools of thought within haiku to express themselves freely.

If you would like to be a guest blogger for a month please contact
Colin Stewart Jones geaneditor
  • gmail[.]com with a brief proposal.

Susan Shand, England, will be our first guest blogger throughout the month of January, 2013.
Johannes S. H. Bjerg, Denmark, will be our guest for February, 2013.
Violette Rose-Jones, Australia, will be our guest for March, 2013.

Stella Pierides, Germany, will be our guest for May, 2013.

    thank you

Journal Announcements / Dear poet and friend
October 26, 2012, 10:19:27 PM
Dear poet and friend

After a brief hiatus from haiku Notes from the Gean: haiku journal
will be back on the cyber-stands on December 15th.
All submissions for all genres: haiku, tanka, haiga, haibun, linked forms & resources (essays, reviews etc);
should now be sent to Colin Stewart Jones at geaneditor[at]gmail[dot]com
and be in hand for December 1st to be considered for the December issue.

I will be solely responsible for editing Notes from the Gean: haiku journal.
Many poetry journals have only one or two editors, even within the haiku world this is the case.
As many of you know politics does have an enormous impact within publishing communities
and this seems more heightened within haiku circles: strange considering it is the worlds shortest form
and should traditionally contains no part of the self.
I want no part of cliques or groups or this or that school of thought
Notes from the Gean will accept any of the short forms provided the writing is of quality.

I have the analytics from our previous issues and it was obvious from the data,
even given the propensity for folk to jump to their own work and that of their friends,
that Notes from the Gean was getting too fat: We have a loyal readership
but it is clear from the data that even the most loyal read more from the front
of Notes from the Gean than from the back.
With this in mind Notes from the Gean will be a much slimmer volume from now on
a Leaner, Meaner Gean, if you will.

The decision to revive Notes from the Gean: haiku journal does fill a gap in the market
there are few multi-genre haiku magazines,
as far as I know Notes from the Gean is the only ELH journal that uses a page flipping format
We also allow our readers the option to print or save the PDF.
And our readers should look for further developments as we continue to embrace new technologies.

As I have said Notes from the Gean: haiku journal will be edited and typeset solely by myself
and I will be responsible for any mistakes and or failure but I stress this
My decision to do this by myself is in no way a reflection on the merit of any of the former editorial team.

Thank you for your submissions and continued support.

Dear Readers,

I have been working with a mystery webguy, who wants to remain nameless for the time being, with a view to simplifying the NFTG site. It is a complete joy that I have found someone who can translate my ideas into reality.

The graphic below shows how the new entry page will look. Readers will now have the option to click on one of the cherries to go to either the current issue or the other cherry which will take you to the static information pages.

The magazine part will still be in a flip format: we will be using Calemeo from now on as they support all platforms and devices, including i-Pad and Android.

Thanks for your continued support

Journal Announcements / NFTG looking to i-pad users
December 13, 2011, 07:14:56 PM
Dear Readers,

We have so far had over 1000 hits in 5 days and I believe this signifies that the majority of you are enjoying our new flip format. We are, however, using a basic version of yudu software to facilitate our new format and it is not without its problems. I am aware Flash presents a problem for i-pad and i-phone users and we do not wish to lose our readers who use these devices and have, therefore, been looking into viable alternatives which are cross-platform.

you can view it here

http://issuu.com/nftg/docs/nftg.3.3

I have managed to find a reasonably priced option which will work on pc, mac and i-pad and have secured a 14 day trial. I am testing this at the moment and will embed the current issue of NFTG into our website later tonight when I am fully satisfied. However, the Gean coffers are not limitless and once the 14 days are up we may have to revert to the basic option.

I am pleased the Haiku Foundation has managed to secure its funding . . . we need a lot less to keep us going. If a small percentage of our 1000 plus readers would consider donating a few dollars (which is no more than the cover price of a standard magazine) you could help us to remain cross-platform. An apple a day . . . as they say!

Details of how to donate can be found here:

http://www.notesfromthegean.com/support.html

Thank you in advance

FYO,
though we have set up a google group, we are using it as a means of collecting an email list so as to provide basic info and updates to our readers. we have no intention of using it as a discussion group. We have an outbox only, no-one will be able to send mail or see your email address, except me and you DO NOT need a gmail account to subscribe.

FYO...we are in the process of making the site crawler friendly as NTFG will be regularly archived by the British Library and I hope you'll agree that this will be a great asset to future haijin as all of your work will now be kept for posterity.

This will be a bumper issue with several new features which align us more closely with our mission statement to educate and "hear" your voices speak.

btw try typing in "haiku journal" in google ;)

thank you for your patience

Gean Tree Press News:

Submissions Policy Change

Dear Readers

In our mission statement Notes from the Gean encourages experimentation and because of this it is incumbent upon us that we must also be forward thinking and keep up with modern methods of communication. Therefore, we have changed our submissions policy to reflect this.

At Notes from the Gean we believe that there is much poetry posted on social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter etc, that is worthy of publishing. Including such works, that could easily be missed or lost due to the volume of posts on such sites, in a specialist magazine setting ensures that they are properly presented and kept for posterity.

As poetry on social networks and blogs is not representative of an editor's selection we, therefore, deem such works as unpublished. Though we now consider such works to be unpublished we still ask that they not be under consideration elsewhere and that you also bear in mind that each work will still have to undergo the same rigorous selection process, by our editors, as any other submission would.

Submissions for the September issue, close on September 14th

We apologise for our first time being late but
Volume3, issue 2 will be out on the 28th of September

follow this link for details:

http://www.notesfromthegean.com/indexeditorial.html

Richard Krawiec, USA  will be accepting submissions for Haibun from September 15th

for a sneak preview of our new look and philosophy please follow this link to our Facebook page :

http://www.facebook.com/groups/182461010541/

Also as part of our commitment to furthering the understanding of haiku at a grass roots level NFTG will be conducting a Ginko in Aberdeen, Scotland, September 17th

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=271687592857151

Notes from the Gean Ginko
Samurai Gala Day, Aberdeen, Scotland, 17th September 2011

As part of Aberdeen's celebrations for Thomas Blake Glover; "The Scottish Samurai" Notes from the Gean will lead a Ginko (haiku nature walk), which will be free and open to the public, from St Machar Cathedral through Seaton Park along the Don River and on to the Brig O' Balgownie past Glover's old home and then proceed through the Nature Reserve to the Murchar (Don Estuary).

This should take around 2-2.5 hours, but we will cater to all ages and abilities

People should bring a notepad and pen to take down notes of images from the ginko

Wear good shoes/boots and dress for the weather

We will then hold a session (in a venue TBA)
here the walkers will work on images gathered from the Ginko
and Alan Summers and Colin Stewart Jones help to produce these into Haiku

Alan will then lead a Renga/Renku session and there will be an opportunity to perform the finished work

Notes From the Gean will run a special feature on the event which will be published
along with selected haiku and renga from the ginko  in the next issue of the NFTG

Journal Announcements / new haibun editor @ NFTG
August 14, 2011, 12:35:49 AM
I am pleased to announce that Richard Krawiec, USA
will be the new haibun editor at Notes from the Gean

As some of you may already know, Richard is widely published,
he has a degree in creative writing and teaches an advanced fiction course
and will bring his own aesthetic to haibun and to NFTG

NFTG's site is currently undergoing redevelopment and Richard's details will be up very soon
and he will be accepting submissions for our December issue
as soon as the new look NTFG makes her debut on the web

I will still be acting as haibun editor for the September issue
and will be happy to accept submissions until September 14th
In particular I am keen to read more longer works, serial haibun and collaboration haibun

ALL NTFG submissions will close on September 14th
which will enable us to get NFTG out to our subscribers by late September

I apologise for us being late with this issue
but there has to be a first time for everything!
