Other Haiku News / The Renku Sessions
March 06, 2015, 05:56:35 PM
Hi everyone,

Our junicho is up to verse #5 already, do come over and have a look - and join in too. No experience necessary.

The verse chosen for stanza 4 contains an embedded link to an art video so we may be making history as the first multi-media renku!

Simply go to the THF home page and click on the title under the slides for "Junicho",
Sandra Simpson, sabaki

Other Haiku News / Our hokku has been chosen
February 13, 2015, 04:34:06 PM
Hi everyone,

With the hokku selected we're looking for a wakiku - 2-line second verse - in the junicho that's being written over at The Renku Sessions (go to the homepage and click on either the Renku Sessions graphic or look for the link to the wakiku under the slides).

Everyone welcome, no experience in renku (linked verse) necessary.

Hope to see you there,
Sandra

Other Haiku News / New Renku Sessions is starting
February 06, 2015, 09:38:51 PM
Hi everyone,

Just to let you know that a new Renku Session is starting - we're doing a 12-verse junicho and the last day for submitting candidate verses for the hokku (first verse) is February 12.

There's an Introduction page so you can read up on junicho and renku a little bit, but the hokku for a renku is the only verse in the whole poem that is just like a haiku.

I'm acting as sabaki for the junicho and have asked that poets in the southern hemisphere submit summer verses and those in the northern hemisphere winter verses.

It would be nice to see plenty of people joining the fun. To find out more, click on the Renku Sessions graphic on the Home page.

All the best,
Sandra Simpson

Journal Announcements / Dark Pens

Can anyone tell me if the online journal Dark Pens is still viable? The web address I had takes me to a holding site.

Thanks,
Sandra

This week I went to a low-key poetry reading in a local bar - one eminent national poet and one well-known-ish local poet reading a few pieces each.

Part-way through I realised how long the poems were, which made me smile and think, I love haiku.

Why?

  • It's not a full-length book but it's still a story worth hearing
  • There's room for imagination
  • It knows when to be quiet
  • It understands the power of a single word
  • It doesn't outstay its welcome

Please feel free to add your thoughts ...

Other Haiku News / Passing of Jan Bostok
September 04, 2011, 06:19:37 PM
Sad news from Australia - Jan Bostok, patron of Haiku OZ, passed away on September 4. She had been in hospital for some time with complications from diabetes.

To read more, go to Haiku NewZ

http://www.poetrysociety.org.nz/haikunews/haikuhappenings

Jan was an amazing woman and a gifted poet who did much to generate interest in haiku and its related forms in both Australia and New Zealand.
