Light Pilgrim:
Thanks for posting this here. I missed it if it was on the trout swirl, or any other link sent to me (or not) by THF.

1st, I agree that so much is lost in the world of THF, and have made that quite clear on my survey responses.
Uncategorized? News to me.
Maybe this will confirm to THF Staff that just because they offer a seemingly resolute menu, it is a ghastly search for some things.

2. Meg, thanks for your honest responses.
Last year, after placing in two international contests (as wonderful as that may be) I personally felt let down. My gut was telling me that I met "someone"s" mark for achieving, but not my own expectations of achieving.
I concur with you that we too often write to be published over writing for our own impulses in "what art is" in our journey.
However, there is some respect in writing to accomplish what has been shown in the past to be effective exploration of the genre.

Warmly,
Jan Benson

On the blurring of photo and photo shopping for effect, I remember that She'll Shahai that Elaine submitted and the ORIGINAL comments by the Master Haijin were pointed towards her use of cosmetics to enhance the original photo, and YET? It was featured in the Expose of "found" Master Haiga experts, such as yourself.
Quite interesting. I thought.

Came across this compilation of 2 min 50 seconds of Carlos Colon's readings on this pod cast.
Seems to have been created in 12/2016 as a tribute.

Click the link, scroll down and tap on the pod cast to download/begin.

Rick:

I think you are counting on "bathroom humor" in your haiku.
Perhaps bring it into more of a nature aspect?

Of course, I'm new to slip realism too, so (grain of salt)...

beyond the fogged
bathroom window
a woodpecker
taps his breakfast

It's rather more a senryu than a haiku, so I think it can bear the "sentence" read.
Yours for consideration or rejection.

But Alan,
I am not relying on that part of the brain.

At no time in the ku does the narrator appear inside the elevator.

a ding
of the elevator
an earworm
burrows deep
.
.
And I in no way assume this exercise is easy, but i am the blind person when it comes to tones and sounds.
My error here is relying on a deep read of the poem, and that fails me.

Perhaps I could add the word "distant" to line one, but the ku is wordy already.

It's not necessarily an easy exercise because most of us are not visually impaired as Elizabeth Hazen was for a few years. But I hope it's useful that we think of smell and sound as vital to a haiku as much as what we 'see' or 'think we see'.

Yes, stuck song syndrome can effect people whether amusingly or otherwise. I think that's why Kylie Minogue's song struck a chord:

It was deliberately making use of that particular phenomenon of brain worm/ ear worm / stuck song syndrome.

Alan,
I thought it might read that way.
Fail on my part?
No, since you found a way in.

As a trained musician, (point of the exercise, how the ignored is recognized, especially sound) when I hear the simple ding of a distant bell, it rings a note in my ear, and ignites a song in the key of that bell. An earworm of usually showtunes.

To put a point on my perceived goal of the exercise.

Alan:
Yes yes yes,
It absolutely amazes me how many international, industrial-nation cities participated in the 1/21/17 human rights and dignity demonstrations; the impetus being reactionary to Trump's lack of values.

Everything I saw on t.v., in regards to the marches, showed a sense of decorum and peaceful demonstrations, with singing and speeches.
History holds many examples of resistance movements in the past. And agreed, guns eventually become actualized when the voices are ignored.

--There is a growing disregard for "police" in America, and an example just last week here in Texas, of another officer killed.
--Trump seems to be moving to a police state, but it is early.
--I do believe even non-gun owners are buying handguns at this time.
--Even here in this active living (senior) complex, the ladies in the gossip groups are talking guns, "for protection". Those who own them are glad to share knowledge on the topic.
