Kelsey has started her own journal, (through the high school) and she is looking for short form poetry. The journal will be published in the school newspaper and on our site. Kelsey has written a few haiku, but her "micro" free verse poems are amazing. She is basically caught somewhere between the two, and that's why she started this. It'll be really cool to see poetry in the ABHS paper... I'm predicting that most of the poets that will submit will be high school and college kids, because there are posters around the school... but anyone is welcome to send her work. More info will come soon... but from now on Kels will be posting info and updates about this. Here is a link

Dear contributors and future readers, the submission deadline for the inaugural issue is almost here... so if you have any last minute submissions you would like to send me, please do that before March 5th. If you are still waiting for a reply to a submission, don't worry! I have been very busy with school so I haven't had a lot of time lately, but I will be going through my inbox soon to reply to any submissions that are there.

The inaugural issue is coming along very well. I have included many different kinds of short poetry... ranging from contemporary haiku, classic 5-7-5 haiku, short free verse poems and tanka. The first issue will be small in size, but big in quality. I didn't have hundreds of submissions to choose from, but  I had enough to fill the issue with some very good poems, and I hope you will enjoy it. I think Dark Pens will grow within the next year, as I submit to more directories and search engines... so bare with me!

I have been reading haiku for awhile, (but havent gotten anything published until a year or so ago) and I have noticed some poems have been hinting at personification recently. Not toataly using it, just hinting at it. I'm just wondering if sometime in the distant future (say 100 years) if personification will be widely accepted in ELH? We'll all be dead by then lol, but it's just fun to think about.

From what I understand (and I am no expert), original haiku HAD to include some sort of nature theme. Now, many dont. and we call those poems senryu. but in Basho's day, if someone had made a senryu type poem... no one would have liked it because of the no nature theme. Just like today, if someone makes a personification "haiku", no one would like, or accept it. Again, I dont know a lot about haiku history... but I've been thinking about this for awhile now.

by the way, I'm not talking about personification like "the sun is smiling". maybe something like the sleepy moon or something along those lines.

Any thoughts?

I'm looking to find a place where I can read my haiku in front of other haiku poets. I have no idea where to go, or how to find these events. Any help is appreciated! :)

I dont know how to say this... but after a long thought, I have decided to retire from haiku. with publications in six journals, i'll end on a high note. I need to find new ways to express myself. this year of haikuing was fun, but it's time to move on to other projects.

I haven't been able to form a good haiku in awhile, I think it might be from stress/lack of sleep. What are some tips to get over this? thanks in advance :)

Dear subscribers and contributors, due to an issue with our submission forms (sending each submission to the spam folder) we have decided to go old fashioned and just use regular email submissions. because i was in a hurry... I deleted my spam folder without checking the messages. As it was in the process of  deleting,  it I saw a good 5 to six submission forms in the box. But it was too late. So if you sent a submission or subscription within the past 2 or 3 days PLEASE re-submit it following the new guidelines in the submission form. Also, due to the higher number of submissions we will not be able to reply to them as fast as we would like. So please allow 2-3 weeks for a reply to your submission.
