Hello,

Does anyone have any news about Jane? How is she? Is LYNX to continue?

Would be grateful for some information.

Snow Leopard

Jane is fine!  :)

Lynx had its final issue.  Jane and Werner are involved in new writing adventures, and of course the Aha! Forum is alive and kicking.

I'm still plotting how to meet Jane one day as she lives right in the middle of nowhere, and I live in England. ;)

warm regards,

Alan

The Sound of Shadows

The Sound of Shadows is Chase Gagnon's first poetry chapbook. It contains 37 haiku.

Julie Warther says,
"The Sound of Shadows embodies a flowing interplay of light and dark. The author, fully aware that one does not exist without the other, interacts seamlessly with both."

Alan Summers, Founder of With Words, says
"Chase Gagnon is a writer who edges his work with atmosphere: Even haiku, in its incredible briefness, can be a poem made larger by the storyteller's gift. As haiku is such a brief approach to writing poetry it could be said, paraphrasing Chase's words, to be firefly ghosts in a frosted mason jar in moonlight. He is very much an up and coming writer creating excitement amongst writers and readers. His work is a breeze of shadows; a gypsy's finger-cymbals pinching the stars; but oh how slowly the fireflies disappear while he slides his lips across the harmonica."

Wow, thank you so much Alan (and Karen) for the wonderful praise. It truly has been a labour of love so I'm glad that shines through.

We will also use it as a teaching guide, as we always include fine haiku that feature seasonal references as well.   With Words (Karen and myself) are keen to really showcase how seasonal references around the globe are worth catching, and how they can be used as an alternative to kigo, and possibly share close working relations.

warmest regards,
Alan

Yay!   This haiku has been accepted by a highly respected online magazine so it'll be seen again, as it was mostly seen across twitter for a few hours.  Yes, a short haiku contest, but then haiku is short, right? ;)

Wow, three haiku publications arrived today!

One was from Sandra, with her haiku calendar.  It blew me away and mightily impressed my wife, a poet, and haiku writer, and writer for television, so she doesn't impress easily.

Very impressive, which I knew already, but still delightfully even more impressed.  High production values, incredible photographs, and fine haiku.

Honestly, don't delay, as I don't know how many copies Sandra has left.  I love mine!   It's going on the wall as soon as it's 2015, but will be read many times through the rest of 2014 for pleasure alone.

Fair enough. I just wasn't sure if posting links was allowed. Here is the link:  http://www.gendaibible.net

Links are certainly allowed. Do you follow the other gendai haiku sites?

The most famous and authoritative in the English language but also bilingual, certainly in the videos:
http://gendaihaiku.com
http://research.gendaihaiku.com

http://rosenberrybooks.com/what-is-gendai-haiku/

My own collection of gendai haiku, short verse and other haiku:
http://area17.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/does-fish-god-know-haiku-collection-by.html

The G-force of Blue | Touching Base with Gendai haiku by Alan Summers

Translating any religious bible is certainly a challenge.  Do you paraphrase, or create new work and wording as for example the original collection that became known as the Christian Bible New Testament from Aramaic to Greek, and then Latin, to English (King James) to New English.

As a translation of a Japanese-language haiku into English isn't fully possible, and all we can do is create an English-language haiku which is a kind of parallel poem, a version, an alternative perhaps, what did you do, how did you approach such a huge undertaking, what changes etc... did you make, and why gendai?

What you mean by gendai haiku for instance, as its history came from certain needs, and from Japanese haiku poets being tortured to death because they stood up against Japan entering the Second World War?

I applaud you for such a huge project!

warm regards,

Alan

Hello all,

I have produced my first calendar - haiku and images - so thought I would let you know that I have some copies available for sale. It is an A4 size (when closed) and designed to be hung on the wall. The images are all colour.

If you duck over to my blog, you'll be able to see a couple of the images, plus information about cost and ordering. http://breathhaiku.wordpress.com/2014/08/22/haiku-calendar-2015/

Thanks for your interest,

A few of my latest books on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Don-Baird/e/B00LQSKG5O/ref=ntt_dp_epwbk_0

An 80's book Transcending the Void is republished and amongst them! Let me know how you like it.

Haiku Wisdom (not on this page but found through Amazon search, for some reason) is a mix of "easy access haiku," stories, and kung fu philosophy. Light and hopefully thought provoking. As the Crow Flies is a book of more challenging haiku combined with advanced kung fu thoughts and perceptions. Haiku - the Interior and Exterior of Being, is a haiku book that reaches deep into the reader's experience of life. Hopefully, each haiku triggers a great deal of feeling and thought -- and adds to the reader's awareness of the activities (comings and goings) of the Tao and all her ways. This book is my most recent haiku endeavor. It was read at Vroman's bookstore (last month). A packed audience ... haiku ... and good times filled the air! I'm still on a high from that adventure!

pipe puffs . . .
an old man adds
to the storm

—fanning spring . . .
the last seagulls
become a cloud—

over his shoulder;
soldiers come home
one by one

returning
the sound of gunfire
returning

woodpecker —
the unusual tempo
of this morning

AK-47;
the suddenness
of it all

her curves in the hands of the moon

in the space between words     worlds

the distance
between grass blades —
this one ant

powder across the pines across

longing for home I become a memory

daydreaming how quickly my mind

each rose the wind leaves behind

tsunami shore;
the child's hands washed
in blood

the rock—
thinking about rolling,
rolling

Drop by, browse, and enjoy!

Thank you.
