Other Haiku News / Spiffing Video!
March 09, 2020, 02:30:46 PM
A spiffing video has been published on Facebook from our lovely 500 year old charity about the Fringe Festival in Chippenham.

I designed gently subversive haiku-inspired street signs with Charlie Graham-May, and Karen Hoy led an amazing typewriting event which became lovingly emotional. A typewritten letter is something special and personal isn't it?

Enjoy the Fringe Festival mini-video that includes subversive haiku inspired street signs (myself and Charlie Graham-May); Karen Hoy at the typewriter, and a wealth of fun and very British Fringiness!

Posted at Call of the Page FB page (not sure there's a direct video link):

Enjoy!

warm regards,
Alan

Other Haiku News / Haiku Street Signs
February 15, 2020, 05:45:37 AM
If there's any UK haiku poets who might be able to visit Chippenham around 27th, 28th or 29th February 2020, there'll be a number of warm, funny, slightly subversive haiku street signs around central town!

We'd love you to take photos, make them funny ones too if you like!

Local companies Call of the Page and Rag and Bone Arts CIC, have worked together to present a visual poetry display throughout the town centre. Look out for Haiku poems through the town centre and join in by making up your own Haiku and sharing them via #ChipHaiku on Twitter!

You can see one of the more 'conventional' ones here:

ANOTHER TRIP AROUND THE SUN: 365 Days of Haiku for Children Young and Old
edited by Jessica Malone Latham
http://www.brooksbookshaiku.com/Latham-AnotherTrip.html

From the Editor's Preface:

Though each poem in this collection may not be a direct reflection of childhood, it is my wish that each poem ignites a discussion or creates a spark of curiosity. For when we live with curiousity and openness, the miracle of the present moment comes through.

My vision for this collection is for these poems to be read each day throughout the year. Read them with your child or grandchild, gift them to a friend whose children no longer live at home to spark memories from the past, or spontaneously sift through the book on a cloud-drift day. Spend time savoring each poem, share memories, or write poems together inspired by that day's haiku.

Other Haiku News / Pushcart Prize nominations!
September 16, 2019, 05:23:07 AM
Another great haikai journal is now nominating work for the Pushcart Prize!

After two major disasters just before my birthday today, along came two big surprises!

First of all I was thrilled to have a haiku selected for commentaries:
https://haikucommentary.wordpress.com/2019/09/15/alan-summers-riverlight/

And then I receive an email to tell me I'm nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and it's for haibun, and one that was totally rewritten, almost from scratch! More power to revision!
https://www.humankindjournal.org/contrib_alan_summers/issue-14-alan-summers

Plus even better!
FIVE former or regular haiku & haibun participants on Call of the Page online courses also won awards including TWO Pushcart Prize nominations for haibun. I wish I could tell you what personal challenges they've gone through, and continue to go through, with both health, and other issues.  Thank you Human/Kind journal!!!

What a birthday already! :-)

So if you haven't checked out Human/Kind please visit, please consider leaving a lovely comment on someone's poetry page too!

And check out the submissions, as the editors are great, and they look for candidates for the Pushcart Prize, Red Moon anthologies nominations, and also Touchstone nominations!

An opportunity for poets...
There is also an opportunity to submit haiku, senryu or tanka poetry online, based on (or matched to) Bristol Museum & Art Gallery's prints, from wherever in the world you are logging on. We are looking for poems to use as examples during the event, and some may also be selected for possible publication on the museum's website.

Details about the opportunity:

The "Fleeting Words" Tanka Competition

Fleeting Words is our newest UHTS Contest, and we hope that it will encourage others to learn to write the classic form of tanka. Any subject is acceptable and syllable count is not an issue, however a tanka rhythm of short, long, short, long, long that distinguishes it from a short poem, is important. Please consider sending multiple tanka so we have plenty to choose from.

You are encouraged to submit in your native language in addition to your English submission.

Please see the General Submission Guidelines for further information.

Submission Period and Deadline: May 1-August 15 of each year.
