The Robert Spiess Memorial Haiku Awards Competition for 2017

Modern Haiku is pleased to announce the Robert Spiess Memorial Haiku Awards Competition for 2017. The purpose of this competition is to honor the life and work of Bob Spiess, editor of Modern Haiku from 1978 to his death on March 13, 2002.

Email entries are accepted as well as postal entries.

Theme: Haiku are to be written in the spirit of the following "Speculation" (Robert Spiess, A Year's Speculations on Haiku, Modern Haiku Press, 1995):

Postal entries should be typed or printed legibly on one sheet paper. The poet's name, mailing address, telephone number, and email address (if any) should appear in the upper left-hand corner above the haiku. Send postal entries to: Billie Wilson, 1170 Fritz Cove Road, Juneau, AK 99801-8501 USA.

Email entries are to be submitted as follows: (1) on the Modern Haiku subscription page,
http://www.modernhaiku.org/subscriptions.html, scroll down to the Donate button; (2) make a donation of up to $5 [$1 for each entry]; (3) when you receive your payment confirmation number, copy and paste it into an email with  your haiku and your name, mailing address, telephone number, and email address; (4) send the email to Billie Wilson at akwilsons@gci.net.

Please keep a copy of your submission; entries will not be returned. Please follow the instructions carefully: entries that are incomplete or that do not comply with the instructions will be discarded.

Entry fee: $1 per haiku, cash, check, or PayPal (U.S. funds); make checks payable to Modern Haiku; for email entries, follow the instructions above.

Adjudication: A judge will be selected by Modern Haiku; the judge's name will be announced at the time of the awards. Judging will be double-blind, and the judge will not know the identity of the entrants. The judge's decisions are final.

Selection criteria: The judge will look for entries that hew to Western norms for haiku as published in Modern Haiku and other leading English-language haiku journals and that best capture the spirit of the theme Speculation above. There are no rules as to syllable or line count.

Awards: First Prize: $100 plus a signed copy of The Turtle's Ears (1971, out of print). Second Prize: $50 plus a copy of Bob's Some Sticks and Pebbles (2001, out of print); Third Prize: $25 plus a copy of Bob's Five Caribbean Haibun (1972, out of print).  Up to five poets will be awarded Honorable Mentions and each will receive a copy of Bob's A Year's Speculations on Haiku (1995).

Notification: Winners will be notified by email or phone before the general announcement. Winning entries will be published in the summer 2017 issue of Modern Haiku and posted on the Modern Haiku Web site, http://www.modernhaiku.org/, on or before July 1, 2017. This year's Only One Kagoshima Tree haiku contest opened on the summer solstice June 22 and ends on September 23 the autumn equinox. 3 Prize Winners and Honorably Mentioned haiku will be announced at a Music & Haiku Symposium on Culture Day November 3, 2015 at the International University of Kagoshima.

The submission date dateline (postmarked envelopes) is September 23, so that contestants can make plans to attend the November 3rd musical celebrations of haiku.

  3 Winners and honorably mentioned haiku will be published in a 100-page memorial book (color). Certificates will also be mailed. We can pay one winner for his/her connecting flight, train, or ferry from points in Japan (ie. Tokyo, Fukuoka, Osaka) to get to the conference in Kagoshima, plus a hotel.
During the largest national cultural festival held in Japan, we are hosting the "Only One Tree Haiku Contest" in Kagoshima on November 3, 2015 at the International University of Kagoshima featuring an opera of haiku with violin, flute and piano accompaniment, address by Dr. Akito Arima the president of Haiku International, and panel of poets and  scholars who propose UNESCO list haiku as a world cultural heritage. Attendees receive autographed complementary copies of World Haiku Club Award winning books and the acclaimed "Mother's Voice" by Murasaki Sagano.

In all, 100 music, dance, tea ceremony, flower arrangement and poetry performances are scheduled during 2 glorious weeks this autumn in Kagoshima Prefecture: including 3 major haiku events on October 24, November 3, & November 7-8, 2015.

I'm sharing here an invitation to participate in a world peace haiku event:

My name is Kyle Kurihara and I'm an intern with the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center (JACCC) in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, California this summer.  This year, in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we started a project called Haiku for Peace.  We're asking poets of all levels and backgrounds to write a haiku about peace on a post-it note to be placed on a wall in the JACCC.  The post-it notes will remain on the wall starting this week until September 19.  After September 19, we'll be making copies of the post-it notes to send to Hiroshima and the Emanuel African Methodist Church in Charleston, South Carolina, the site of the June shootings.

We started a facebook event campaign today where you and your members can post your haiku on the event page wall and we'll transcribe your haiku to a post-it note for you.

Hi folks - just a quick reminder that there is still time to send in entries for this competition that is held to honor Robert Spiess.  See the note above for details.

Alan, the staff at Modern Haiku advised that their website is not set up for the complexities of handling online entries.  Maybe someday.  In the meantime, there is still time for international mail to get to me before the deadline and I hope you and others outside the U.S. will consider entering (in prior years, several international entries were sent -- and some have won  :D.

        It seems that those haiku that have an inherently melodious quality are the most expressive and contain the most felt-depth.
