FYO,
though we have set up a google group, we are using it as a means of collecting an email list so as to provide basic info and updates to our readers. we have no intention of using it as a discussion group. We have an outbox only, no-one will be able to send mail or see your email address, except me and you DO NOT need a gmail account to subscribe.
