Title: "Found" poetry
Post by: Gael Bage on December 19, 2010, 04:38:39 AM
poetry disovered in other non poetry places / publications -

is there such a category in haiku? Here's one I found reported on the bbc site today, actually it said
The UK, not britain.... i cheated a teensy bit  ::)

Britain
slipping and sliding
...not shopping

and another -

The Census Bureau
world population clocks
...tick tock...

or

The Census Bureau
world population clocks -
....alarm rings

thinking about both they work on multiple levels for me.

There are two churches that I drive by each morning when I take my boys to school.  Often, they have short religious slogans on their marquee boards that look and feel like haiku to me.  I'm sorry that I can't recollect off-hand what has been written there, but the style of writing often make me pause, look, and think - not just about religion, but about the nature of haiku.

Thanks for starting the thread on found haiku!

Hi Julie, if your church sparks a haiku I look forward to reading it.  :)

This is not in line with the post's intended point, but I feel most good haiku are fresh images of an instant that suddenly jumps into one's perception--in other words, the haiku feels like a "found" perception.

Basho's frog leaping haiku is one such instant that I love. It's a "found" moment of insight, which I admit is not  what a found poem is. Yet, in both cases a random observation arises into awareness, at first perhaps incongruously, but then its appropriateness is valued.

Going on a haiku walk, or ginko, provides just such "found" moments.

Hello,

Not to be a spoilsport -- I can see y'all are having a lot of fun with this -- but I am confused as to what makes this "haiku".  (Even though the thread is called "'Found' poetry", this is the haiku forum, yes?  As Alan pointed out to someone who asked about tanka.)

Outside of being three lines long, I am not seeing the elements of haiku in these -- seasonality, concrete images rather than abstract ideas, moment, etc.  The only one that for me comes close is this one of Gael's:

a total eclipse
of the total eclipse -
cloud cover

I can see calling these "found short poetry" or "found tercets", but "found haiku"?  Could someone please enlighten me?

Of course Cat you are quite right, it was just a bit of fun we have asked if we can have a sandbox / play area so that fun moments can have a place, see this other thread below,  but so far no reply from mods / admin,  :)

Oh, I see.

I didn't know if this was supposed to be a serious discussion (it sounds so in some spots) or just for fun.  Which is fine.

Hello:

Prior to learning about haiku, I loved to read "found" poetry and created some myself. Most are pretty long and the only one with a semblence to haiku is this:

Every Animal A Trophy

(Minnesota hunter discussing
what a Trophy should really mean)

every animal
buck or doe, calf or fawn -
trophy

Found poetry has a long history, and found haiku in poetry has regularly been used over the years, and occasionally found haiku in the news.

Maybe it could have its separate topic, and perhaps we might end up with some shasei haiku eventually?

Not found haiku, but you might like to read Haiku News: http://www.wayfarergallery.net/haikunews/

Enjoy! ;-)
