Haiku of the Day for August 2024 features Guest Editor Chandra Bales’ collection on the theme of Migration. This is what she has to say by way of introduction to this theme:
We experience many migrations in our lives—we observe animals and plants traveling from one habitat or zone to another, and we change locations ourselves. I learn from these movements, but I am especially intrigued by other life journeys. In addition to physical migration, we transition through emotions, beliefs, careers, desires. And at some point in our own or someone else’s life, we might journey from one physiological or cognitive state to another. I am inspired by all the amazing haiku I read as I prepared for the August 2024 Per Diem/Haiku of the Day—thank you, Poets. If only we had many more days in this one month to share your beautiful writing!

Why is avocado called alligator pear?
Over the years, the avocado has been called an alligator pear, custard apple, butter pear and vegetable pear. The name alligator pear originated from a specimen that has a rough skin similar to the hide of our Everglades beast of the swamps. NAPLES DAILY NEWS Feb 2017

Each migration is by a new generation, so they cannot learn from others. Instead, they rely on their genes.”
