Book of the Week: from Face to Face
Linda Marucci, author of our Book of the Week, from Face to Face, from 2006, writes autobiographical, occasionally confessional haiku, sometimes with Christian imagery redolent of Rome, as in the haiku sequence, “Ash Wednesday”, and sometimes in a spare, allusive style that reminds us of Issa, as in her haiku sequence entitled “The AIDS Connection”. Linda leaves us speculating about the deeper nature and meaning of the spiritual crises reflected in her poems, but the feeling shines steadily through.
Giving up
a lover
for lent
writing his resume
I leave out the carpenter’s
trembling hands
the old woman
at the altar, scraping wax:
candles for the dead
