Book of the Week: The Way the Wind

Today’s Book of the Week is The Way the Wind, by American journalist, photographer, poet and sailor Hal Roth. Roth and his wife spent many years together aboard their blue-water yacht, sailing around the Pacific basin and publishing accounts of their interests and adventures. Published by Wind Chimes Minibook in 1983, this chapbook of love haiku dedicated to his wife is a fitting record of his lasting feeling.

the way the wind
arranges her hair
. . . rearranges it

argument ended
her pearl earring reflects
the candle flame

You can read the entire book in the THF Digital Library.

  1. Correction: the Hal Roth who wrote this collection is not the same Hal Roth who sailed around the world with his wife. The haiku poet Hal Roth was a high school administrator.
