Book of the Week: Stone Circles

Today’s Book of the Week is Stone Circles, a collection of haiku and haibun by the Welsh/Irish poet Noragh Jones. These are appealing, imaginative explorations of Celtic/Christian myth and legend based on personal pilgrimages to the ancient shrines by a modern, well-educated woman. Jones handles the pilgrimage form of haibun invented by Basho with imaginative reach, humour and mature assurance. There are also short collections of love haiku commemorating Noragh’s relationship with her husband, haiku poet Ken Jones. It is our loss that Noragh and Ken, stalwarts both of the haiku movement in the British Isles, died within months of each other in 2017.

“Now the abbey is rebuilt and the crowds of pilgrims are back. Here we all are, with our unraveling lives and shaky consciences, hoping for miracles or something.”

–from Pilgrimage to Iona
