Announcing The Haiku Foundation Monthly Kukai

The way people respond to the circumstances of their lives tells us so much about them. We do it with poetry — that’s what makes us poets. Beginning tomorrow, The Haiku Foundation will offer a monthly kukai to stimulate and chronicle our poetic reactions as we work our way through the current situation. It’s designed for your enjoyment as well as an opportunity to keep your craft in good working order. So please, take the necessary precautions, maintain your social distances, wash your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds as often as you can — and plan to share your poetic thoughts with your fellow travelers.

The THF Kukai Overview

A kukai is a (usually quite casual) poetry contest. The administrator of the kukai (that’s us) assigns a theme for a given writing period and posts to Troutswirl (The Haiku Foundation blog) on the THF site, which is then redirected outward through our various media outlets. Poets write work to this theme during the allotted time and submit it to the administrator. The work submitted is gathered into an anonymous roster and posted to Troutswirl (The Haiku Foundation blog) for public viewing. At that time all participating poets and other interested readers may vote for their favorites. Votes are tallied and the results made public. Ten winners will be acknowledged each month, and offered their choice of prizes from a list compiled by the Foundation.

Our first kukai will begin tomorrow, April 1, 2020, at 9:00 a.m. Our first theme will be announced at that time, along with detailed instructions for participation.

  1. Fun!
So sorry to have missed the April Kukai, but it’s on my radar now.
A well run Kukai makes for an unusual gift of both giving and receiving and I love the way poets’ different and unexpected visions enlarge a single subject. Always inspiring! Thanks for hosting!

  2. Surely interesting. Could it be so arranged as the submissions would be without a name and name separately sent to the administrators? This is a suggestion. Otherwise it will be a pleasure, in whatever way, to participate.

  3. Great! Love kukai. Nice gathering place for poets with very interesting outcomes when it comes to voting. After a very long time, it’s back again. Now we even have two, Haiku Sanctuary and here the THF. Good luck!

  4. Wonderful! I find participating in the renku in progress to be a sanity saver right now. And this will be a welcome addition. Thanks!
